Joomla is the most popular open source content management system on the web today. Because it is an open source program, anyone and everyone can write extensions that will work with the initial core components of the software. This is why you will find thousands of extensions that you can download for Joomla and Joomla templates are no different.

Templates is what will define you look and style, as well as layout of the website. They come in two different formats: back end and front end templates. The back end designs are what the administrator, editor will see whenever they log into the account. The front end templates is what any visitor to the actual website will see whenever they come to your page.

Depending upon what type of website you have will depend upon the style of the template you will want to use. For those of you who either already have a store online or for those of you who are getting ready to launch a new store site, Joomla eCommerce templates is what you need. You can find them all over the web and they have already got the Virtuemart capabilities built right into the template. All you have to do is a search and then locate which one that you want.

As mentioned earlier, this program is an open source software program and any designer or regular Joe can write a layout version of their own that will work with you initial Joomla core software. So you can just imagine how many possibilities there are that are available across the World Wide Web. The most difficult thing that you will have to do is find one. If you have a special layout in mind, it has probably already been made; however, locating it by sifting through the thousands that are available can prove to be a little difficult and time consuming. Another option of yours is to hire a designer yourself to write the template that will fit your specific needs. At least this way, you will be guaranteed to have that one certain layout that none of the other millions of web pages will have. It will be truly unique to your website and your website only!

This programs eCommerce templates can be a little more expensive than that of a normal layout because of the integration of the Virtuemart capabilities. So you can plan on spending a little more for your layouts; however, there are free eCommerce layouts available across the web. Just make sure that they will suit your needs before you download them. Usually one download will only work for one website; so if you have multiple sites, you will have to download the template more than once. Another option is to join a template club. You can purchase a membership (depending upon the length of the membership depends upon the price) and for that amount of money you can download any layout you desire as long as your membership is valid. If you have multiple sites, this can prove to be your best option if you can’t find a free template that will work.
party planning blog

You’ve jumped off the deep end and decided to start your very own website. Congratulations are in order, this is a great decision that will allow you to interact with people online and give you a wonderful creative outlet! Instead of just browsing the Internet, wondering where your next paycheck is gong to come from, you have decided to step up, invest a little bit of money, and try to turn that money into something that might just pay dividends – a website.

At this point you’ve probably done at least a little bit of research, so it won’t seem as daunting as it may have just a few days ago. You have probably heard about something called a domain registry, and about something else called a web hosting service. After looking into the various web hosting options you may be really confused as to what you need. Most than any other options you’ll likely see recommendations for shared, reseller, VPS and dedicated hosting.

The advice you should most listen to is relaxing, this is the most important step. At first all of this stuff will likely be quite confusing, but after a few hours it will likely click and you’ll have a good grasp on things. Some things you just can’t learn through research, you’ll only learn from experience. Fortunately it’s tough to make any major mistakes and you can avoid most of the larger pitfalls using your common sense and a decent amount of research.

Through all of your decision making, keep in mind that web hosting it the most important aspect of having your own website. Now, if you are just starting out, you will almost definitely want to get into shared hosting first. When you get too large, or your needs get to specific, you can start looking at VPS or dedicated hosting. Remember that researching the Web host you plan on using is a good idea, but also remember that if you get started and your Web host turns out to be hard to work with, you can always leave and find another one.
cnn.com

One thing that makes Content Management Systems click is the way they’ve made website creation a breeze. Now it makes you wonder why you’ve had to be intimidated by those web programming languages when they would have little use by now. Of course, Java, PHP, ASP and the others will always mean the world to those who practice them, but as far as non-technical users are concerned, this development in web design technology is unsurpassed.

Probably the most popular CMS type used today is the module DotNetNuke which is incredibly simple and effective as a web design tool. It has a smooth and easy-to-follow interface which only requires common sense and basic computer operations from its user. Now you can easily put up multimedia web pages as well as provide a safe place for your documents and other information. In other words, a content management system is a versatile way of managing your site from all aspects of your website, from appearance to document maintenance.

Although all of them will have the same basic features and capabilities, there are several other types of CMS such as Bespoke which is known for being highly customizable to the user’s working environment. Two other examples are Enterprise CMS which boasts of its workflow and security management properties and Open Source CMS which comes rich with freely available tools and functionalities.

There’s no question about ease of use being the main factor that makes CMS a hit. Although they rely on the same platform used for hardcore web programming languages and databases, they have simply become the more practical alternative for anyone who could use time and cost savings on their web design projects.

However, it is not wise to rest on these systems’ usability because they remain mere tools that could not guarantee web visibility and traffic on their own. What you put in your website and how you put it together will still be ultimate arbiter of your website’s success.
cheap wedding favors

These days, with the boom in providing programs online for businesses instead of on the desktop, has led many businesses to obtain such programs to meet their specific organization’s needs. Since these programs require low monthly subscriptions instead of a large down payment usually required for normal computer applications, along with the strong security you can get these days online through SSL, it’s becoming much safer and cheaper for businesses to take the ‘cloud computing’ path in running their business.

A few problems exist though for businesses wanting to use online applications, a big one is that there may not be any online applications out there to meet the specific workflow needs of the business. Businesses will also find it difficult to build such an application as website development does not have its own Microsoft Access or FileMaker to build these, requiring businesses to hire programmers to build these programs for their needs which can be a costly scenario, particularly for small businesses.

Now though there are application builders that are finally advanced enough to use without any programming, or only little for more advanced features. One such application builder I found to be very efficient is Fabrik, which is a free open source builder for one of the world’s most popular Content Management Systems, Joomla. This program lets you choose what fields to put on each screen for the program you want to build, letting you make user accounts, forms, reports, tables, graphs and even calendars for scheduling. The design of the program can be done through Joomla, where you can find thousands of free or paid themes on the net. ProjectPraise is a good quality theme that makes the application look similar to Basecamp, the most popular Project Management application online, with the options to change the theme colours to anything you want.

Here is a quick tutorial on building a module to manage your customers:

1. First, obtain or install the latest version of Joomla onto your host. You may need technical help for this step as it is a bit tricky.

2. Next, download the latest version of Fabrik. This tutorial is based on Fabrik 2.

3. Open up Joomla in the administrator panel by going to your Joomla website and adding /administrator at the end. The username and password is what you set up when installing Joomla. The username is usually admin.

4. At the top toolbar in administrator, go to Extensions and then Install/Uninstall.

5. Press the Browse button, find the Fabrik file you downloaded, and then press Upload File & Install.

6. Go to Components tab on the top toolbar, and then Fabrik, then press on Groups. Here you can set groups that hold fields for input which you can place on forms. For example, we will make Groups to hold personal details of a client, their address and their contact details.

7. Press the New button, and put in the following details:

Name: customer_personal

Title: Personal Details

Columns: 2 (This will split all the customer’s personal fields into 2 columns)

Then press Save.

8. Repeat step 7 twice but put in the name as “customer_address”, title as “Address Details” for the first one and name as “customer_contact”, title as “Contact Details” for the third one and save each of them.

9. Now go to the Elements tab. Here you can make any type of fields for the groups you made before, fields that could be just for input, lists of choices, dates with popup calendars and more types.

10. Press New, we will make an element that holds the customer’s first name. Put in the following details:

Name: firstname

Label: First Name

Group: customer_personal (this field belongs to the Persona Details group we made before)

Element type: field (this makes the element a box you can type inside of)

Go to the Table Settings tab on the right of the screen, and click Yes for Show in table. This will make it so the first name of the customer will be shown in the table we will build soon.

Nothing else needs to be changed. Just press Save.

11. Repeat step 10 but for the following:

a.

Name: lastname

Label: Last Name

Group: customer_personal

Element type: field

Show in table: Yes

b.

Name: lastname

Label: Last Name

Group: customer_personal

Element type: field

Show in table: Yes

c.

Name: company

Label: Company Name

Group: customer_personal

Element type: field

Show in table: Yes

d.

Name: address

Label: Full Address

Group: customer_address

Element type: text area (makes a large box to put in whole address)

Show in table: No

e.

Name: phone

Label: Phone Number

Group: customer_contact

Element type: field

Show in table: Yes

f.

Name: mobile

Label: Mobile Number

Group: customer_contact

Element type: field

Show in table: No

g.

Name: email

Label: Email

Group: customer_contact

Element type: field

Show in table: Yes

12. Go to the Tables tab. Here we will setup a table so all the customers you save in the program will be shown here, where you can click to view and edit each of them, or delete them from the program.

13. Press New. Do the following changes:

label: Customer

Published: Yes (this will allow the form to be displayed on your application)

Advanced Search: Yes (will allow you to search for customers in the table)

Show Add: Yes (you can add new customers by pressing the Add button in the program)

Go to the Data tab on the right, and put in the following information:

Connection: site database

Create new table: Customers (this is where the customers will be taken from the database on the website to be displayed on the table)

Note that since you made a new table called Customers, this will also make a Form called Customer which we will cover in the next step.

Press Save.

14. Go to the Forms tab. Now we will build a form (module) where all the groups and fields we made in the previous steps will be placed, so the user can add or edit customers.

15. Click on Customers in the list. This Form was made when we made the Table above. Place the following details:

label: Customer

Published: Yes

Go to the Groups tab on the right.

Untick “Create a group with the same name as this form”

Choose each of the following from the top large box and press Add to add these groups to the form:

customer_personal

customer_address

customer_contact

Press Save.

16. Now we will make a tab in your main program so you can see the table of customers, and another tab to add new customers. Go to the Menu tab at the most top toolbar, and press on Main Menu.

17. Press New and click on the Fabrik link. Then click on the Table link. Put in the following information:

Title: Customers

Table: Customers

Press Save.

18. Press New and click on the Fabrik link. Then click on the Form link. Put in the following information:

Title: Add Customer

Form: Customer

Press Save.

You have now built a simple Customer Relationship Management (CRM) application within 1 hour!

I hope you found this tutorial helpful and help you realise that building an online application is not overly complex and time intensive as you may have expected.
wedding blog

This Article presumes basic knowledge of Joomla. A working installation of Joomla is required.

Let’s say you need – or just want – to create a Site just like EzineArticles or similar. If you are keen on using a more generic CMS, and not an article-site targeted script, you might think about using Joomla. That is always a good choice.

If you tried to use Joomla as it is, with the default Article Management you will soon feel its limitations, There are some flaws that will hinder you to manage your site like a professional Article publishing Webservice.

1. You have to make the users Editors. Regular users (Registered) do not have the right to create Articles. You have to make them manually Editors. This might work for some website concepts, but for most an automation would be welcome.

2. Users Cannot view their submitted content. There is no list of submitted articles.

3. Administrators do not get any notification per email when a new Article was submitted.

4. Users do not get an email notification when their Articles got approved and published

5. Users do not get a message or notification when their Article is NOT approved.

6. Article Submitting interface is confusing and rather complicated for novice users and users not used to Joomla interface. There are some features that are not needed in a regular article based website. For instance the whole mosimage concept is merely a pain for a regular user, since no webmaster in the right mind would allow any user to upload media on their server. Also the whole image embedding concept that Joomla uses is not very intuitive for the first time user.

7. The most annoying part of the whole Article Management process is the approving system of Joomla. By default there is no way to filter the unpublished content or even to have the latest submitted articles first. Imagine you have hundreds of articles already submitted by users and around 10 submitted a day. To find these and to check the contents you have to search after the title or somehow narrow the list.

8. There is no way to have a reject-edit-republish workflow. That means if your user publishes an article that you then reject, there is now mechanism to ensure that the user gets a feedback on his mistakes so he can postedit the article and resubmit it. This is a major flaw in the article concept of any respectable article publishing website.

Looking for overcoming these shortcomings of Joomla we tried to find a set of components that allow you to complete these tasks and use the standard Joomla article Management. We do not tried out core hacks or similar since these are hard to maintain to the latest version of Joomla and also could interfere with other components that are vital for a good Joomla Website (Community Builder, etc)

We looked in several resources in the hope to find an integrated solution for our problems. We could only find scattered components that solve some of the problems, but not in the way we hoped:

JA Submit and Ninja Simple submit – ninjoomla.com

- simplifies the submission process

- allows non-registered submission (not our goal thou) but overcomes the problem with manually making the users Registered.

- Remove some of the confusing errors Joomla throws at the unknowingly user

myContent

- Allows users to edit their past submissions

- Allows users to unpublish their content

- Allows users to submit in any section

Article Factory Manager – http://www.thefactory.ro

- The installation of this component went without a problem, just like a normal Component. Then we made a Menu (displayed just for registered users) with some links to the main functionalities of this component. We defined “My Articles”, “Submit new article”, and ” my Resource Box”

- An interesting feature the component introduces to our workflow is the “resource box”. This is a small signature box allowing only limited HTML code in it (just Anchor and Breaks – a and br ). This is an information box regarding the user that will be appended to their submitted articles. This way users save their info and backlinks once and can focus on the Article submission process.

- Another neat feature we discovered and that proves to be a very useful for us webmasters that do not want our webpages to turn into a link farm – is the limitation of the number of anchors in an article and separately in the Resource Box. This way we ensure that users will not submit articles with a lot of links in them without having to reject them. They simply cannot submit them.

- We were happily surprised also by the HTML tags limitation possibility, a feature that strips all tags besides the allowed ones. As we discussed with the authors, all “script” tags are automatically striped regardless of your settings. This is a must-have security feature.
mompreneur

What is it?

Drupal – Developers choice, if you are the type of individual who thrives on hand-coded content and scripts. In comparison to other Content Management Systems (CMS), Drupal, relates more to the developer as its structure is more script based. This platform may not be strictly for designers unless they are willing to commit to the development side of web design and web functionality.

As being a CMS the functionality is quite similar to other popular choice, and for the sake of comparison: Joomla. When we talk about a functionality we think of the necessary features, blogs, comment section, author’s name, etc. Drupal, in its essentials, can function similar to any standard blog you see on the web today. However, the capabilities expand farther beyond the releam of blogging, and thrives, when building large dynamic sites.

Joomla – The name Joomla literally means “all together”, with that in mind comes the theory that the CMS would live up to its name. In comparison to Drupal, code-wise, Joomla falls short, for designers and artist a like, Joomla is more favoured as the support for themes is much larger based than Drupal. If you looking for a well designed theme with the basic functionalities of the standard “web 2.0″ blog, Joomla is a more favourable option.

In comparison to the two CMSs there is no better option but rather a personal preference or skill set. If you are more developer oriented, and do not mind the learning curve of Drupal, then Drupal would be the favourite of the two, if you are more on the art or design side, then Joomla would be the better choice, its not to say that a designer can not choose Drupal or a developer should not use Joomla once again it comes down to a matter of preference. Install both on a test server and see which one suites your needs accurately.
fall wedding favors

I am new to Joomla 1.5 and have placed my Main Menu at the top instead of the left. I would like to format the menu but can’t seem to find the class .menu or _menu in template.css. Does anyone where I can find the css code for this menu?

Also, I would like to have a large image that stretches across the page (ie 900 px) and have it change with each menu item. Underneath the image is where I want to have a left sidebar. Right now, the left sidebar stretches from just below the header to the bottom of the page. Basically, I want to cut off the top half of the left sidebar so I can fit an image across the site. Does anyone know how to do this? Thank you.

Forgot to add that I am using rhuk_milkyway template.
hostgator coupon codes
