Joomla is a content management system (CMS) like none other I’ve researched to date. There are a dozen or so CMS competitors. Some are commercial and charge for their software. Several others, like Joomla, are open source and available without cost.

Any perceivable differences are limited to a few specific traits. For some there is the cost factor which could deter many potential purchasers from buying the commercial products. While there are a few open source products that have low costs the commercial software products tend to be much higher.

Many proponents of the commercial CMS software suggest the product is a better choice once installed, primarily because of the post sale support such as training and stability associated with security experiences with the software.

Since most of the open source CMS developers are largely volunteers the issue could appear to be a potentially formidable challenge. This is where Joomla, for one, works very hard to capitalize on several factors that are currently feeding the product’s success.

An example of Joomla’s out-of-the-box approach to creating a trouble free product is a recently held “Doc Camp.” This international get-together was a follow-up to a weekend Joomla “bug squashing event.” The company promoted the events with the goal of increasing the viability and functionality of the product while focusing on cleaning us any inconsistencies in its operational functions.

Reports indicate literally thousands of volunteer developers were on the project. Industry observers state Joomla has a strong commitment to timely upgrades and new releases. Credit is given to the marshalling of volunteers and their exuberant, as well as technologically strong support.

Comparisons tend to favor open source CMS options due to several features:

Consumer friendly free downloads Strong documentation. Reliable training. Ongoing support and development

The Players

In addition to Joomla other open source CMS’s are Mambo, Drupal, PHPNuke, Post Nuke, Plone, TYPO3, e107, Open CMS, MODx CMS, WordPress, XOOPS and Zope.

The commercial entrants in the field are Vignette, Alfresco, RedDot CMS, Interwoven Teamsite, Tridion, Microsoft CMS, Oracle portal, Immediacy CMS, GOSS iCM, Hot Banana and Fatwire Content Server.

Can Joomla Hold On To The Top Spot?

Joomla tends to meet the strictest parameters expected of companies that would like to be considered leaders in the field. The competing team at Mambo also renders a build quality and application strength that keep them squarely in Joomla’s sights.

The remainder of the group provide add-on features like, job posting, guest books, and chat to name a few of the most popular features.

Once thing all open source CMS have in common is they are distributed under GNU GPL and tend to work well with most operating environments. Joomla gets the higher marks mainly because of the strengths of its largely volunteer developer family.

When looking more closely through the list of commercial CMS contenders we find the licensing differs greatly. Additionally databases and related servers in addition to programming languages are similar but created specific differences depending on the applications.

Overall, when comparing features like, building applications, operability, performance and user friendliness, Joomla out ranks 99.9% of all comers in every category. It must be hard to be humble when you’re that good and Joomla’s legion of fans is expanding more rapidly at every download.
candle wedding favors

How Open Source Software is Democratizing the Web: My Adventures with Joomla.

Read on if you’d like to learn how a webdesigner with no programming experience was able to create the RSS Powered News Supersite ANewRelevance.com.

While in the shower, lightning strikes and you have a great idea for a website (my best inspiration always seems to reveal itself in the shower). Problem is: 1) you don’t have the skills or know how to create it and/or 2) you don’t have the budget to have it built. What a familiar conundrum, your brilliant website idea is all dressed up with nowhere to go. This summer I ran into the same situation.

First, a little background.

I am a self-professed news, information and knowledge junkie. I always want to know what’s going on in the world and I always want to learn. In the past, that meant lots of time hammering away on my keyboard with the T.V. on in the background. These were essentially hour after hour toggle-thons of Olberman, Maddow, Matthews, O’Reily, Hannity, Colbert, Stewart, SportsCenter…you get the picture.

I got married. That’s what started this whole adventure. I used to be a bachelor with lots of available time for my guy channel surfing. When I got married, I had to leave these friends, not to mention most of my stuff that didn’t make the cut from my old apartment, behind. Interesting thing is, my wife is more of a T.V. watcher than I am. Problem is, it’s an entirely different line-up of programming: Bones, House, CSI whatever and LOTS of reality shows. This is when the challenge presented itself: How am I supposed to know what’s going on in the world if I can’t watch my shows? Taking away my programming is like asking Derek Jeter to hit a game winning home run with no thumbs. These were dark times.

To the internet I went.

I figured all of the information I wanted is out there, it just won’t be wrapped up in the pretty little package that I’ve known all my single years. Each day would start the same way: start up the ‘pute, login in, fire up Firefox and begin the search. I would go site by site, trying to gather everything I could about what was going on in the world around me: Drudge, Espn, TMZ, Fark, TechCrunch, etc.

Then came the idea:

What if I could put all of the top headlines from my favorite sites onto one page? Or better yet, put all of the news I would ever want on one site?

Then came the problem:

I’m a web designer but I’m not a coder. That’s some serious functionality.

Then came the reality:

I can put together a great looking site, but I’ve always dreaded the day when when I would have to learn how to get onto the backend and make things happen. Static site, sure. Dynamic site, well…serious times call for serious measures.

The research began.

And the focus was primarily two-fold: 1) How is news delivered on the internet? and 2) What are the best platforms to deliver it? I had to find a way to create a dynamic site that would not only gather the news, but present it in a way that was easy to use, easy to navigate and would give me direct access to the sites I included. Of course, I had no idea how this was going to be done, but after a considerable amount of searches I found that there were numerous options, including open source software, that would meet my needs.

Some information about open source.

Open source software, in a nutshell, is software that offers out-of-the-box usability, is almost entirely customizable and is, best of all, free. You may have heard of some: Ruby on Rails, Drupal, WordPress, Joomla. They offer rich functionality features for things such as site development, content management and on-line publishing. If you’re concerned about the aesthetic, thousands of themes (the look of the site) are available for free download or purchase. When it comes to functionality, hundreds of plugins and modules are also availble. If you can think of it, there is probably a module or plugin for it. These downloads are also available at no cost. Basically, you can build at site on your own that would cost thousands if you hired a developer.

With so many choices, how do I chose?

It totally depends on what purpose you want your site to serve. What do you want your site to do? Who is your audience? If you want to build a community, you’d probably want to go the Drupal or Joomla route. Looking to do some ecommerce? Both offer solid options for ecommerce integration. Want to publish your work on-line, WordPress is a great solution. The bottom line is that you have to take the time to do searches, find reference, and determine which options will best serve your needs. For my needs, I chose Joomla.

Joomla

Currenlty, there is considerable debate about which software is better: Joomla or Drupal. Honestly, I say “six of one half dozen of the other”. Both “can skin the cat”, they just do it a bit differently. In my experience, Joomla has been a good solution for me for many reasons:

- With no experience coming in, the learning curve wasn’t too bad.

- The installation (remote server) relatively painless.

- The admin/user interface is accessible and easy to use.

- The support community is solid.

- The available plugins and modules are abundant and well documented.

If you choose Joomla, you can rest assured you won’t be left in the cold. The community of users and developers is large and continues to grow. It is a relevant software, and from everything I’ve read, should be for quite some time.

The next step.

So I had decided on the software. I installed it, chose a theme, configured the database and backend, and chose some modules and plugins that provided the functionality I needed…except for the news. This was the next big step. The reason why I got into this mess in the first place. I needed news to be delivered, updated and posted real-time. With a few more searches I found my answer.

RSS Feeds

RSS, most commonly translated as “Really Simple Syndication” or “Rich Site Summary”, are web feeds used to publish frequently updated works such as blogs, news headlines, audio and video. Sites provide these feeds so that, rather than having to check in on the site frequently, the updates can be delivered to you automatically. Basically they “keep you in the loop”. Numerous applications are available that will deliver these feeds to your desktop. In my case, I needed to find a way to deliver them through my website. This was a challenge because the majority of options I found only supported a small number of feeds (1-3). Past that, they weren’t open source, which meant even if I got the feeds to run through my site, I wasn’t going to be able to configure them. Uhmpf! More searches led me to…

Google AJAX Feed API

At first, it looked intimidating. The name alone kind of made me go “Hun?”. Basically, AJAX (shorthand for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) helps create interactive web applications. This service, provided by Google, allows the user to easily create a set of custom feeds and integrate it into their site by simply copy and pasting the Google generated code. This was the perfect solution. And again, it was free. After some more searching, I found that a module was available for Joomla that would easily translate this service into my sites pages. So I installed the module, noodled it (remember, you can do that with open source), and achieved my desired results. My site was being fed the news that I wanted, but rather than the default 3 feeds per page, I was receiving 12. My simple news site became a news supersite. Aahhhh…success at last.

Now looking out from the Mountain Top…

I have to say it feels good. It would be remiss of me not to give fair warning where warning is due. This project was a considerable challenge and took extreme patience, hard work and LOTS of hours. But in the end, a small town kid with no programming experience was able to create the site that he dreamed of one morning in the shower. There is a revolution going on right now on the world wide web: if you can dream it you can make it happen. All the tools are available and all it will cost is your time. Open source software is definitely democratizing the web. Be brave and good luck.
chocolate favors

Nothing demonstrates this more strongly than their production of extensions.

My definition of extensions is add-ons or accessories that make the Joomla experience richer and more fun. Much like the accessories on your Wii box. You just can’t get enough.

Here’s the Top Ten list of Joomla extensions as compiled by Oscandy.com

1: Quick Preview Button

A team of developers formerly with Miro Corp created a product derived from the creative seed of thought that had been Mambo. By September 2005 Joomla was born!

Since that time Joomla has grown a vast number of add-ons, components, templates, modules, and a host of bots, bits and bites to become what could be the largest Internet industry since Microsoft.

What’s next?
garden wedding favors

What is Open source Customization?

Open source customization is a process of customizing open source content management system (CMS) or scripts like wordpress, joomla, oscommerce, mambo, phpbb and many more, in order to achieve desired functionality and look. Open source customization of this hugely popular CMS requires good knowledge of PHP, CSS, and HTML.

What can you do with the open source CMS like wordpress and joomla?
WordPress is most used blogging software in the world. Its’ seamless user interface makes content write-up, publishing and organizing very easy and enjoyable. WordPress can be used to make a full flange website with almost all the functionalities like ecommerce, forum and Job-portal. Website made with word press are search engine friendly and easy to share with other websites and users. WordPress is widely used for personal and community websites.

Joomla is award wining open source web based software that delivers website without touching a single line of html, css or php. Joomla admin interface is not as easy as wordpress but it gives more control over look and how your content can be viewed on different parts of your website. It has vast library of component, just like wordpress plug-in library. Through this library one can easily make website with almost all functionalities. Joomla is widely used for company and corporate websites.

Why you need customization of wordpress, customization of joomla and other CMS?
To achieve look and feel of the website as in the design files like photoshop .psd
To gain desired functionalities like contact form, navigation system, image slideshow
To retain all browser compatibility for your website, so no matter what browser user is using to view your website the look and feel remains consistent.
To enable website with search engine friendly features and techniques, that improves CMS website ranking in Google, yahoo and MSN.
To make sure that website displays content uninterrupted in all screen sizes.

How to customize joomla and wordpress?
Once you have joomla and wordpress installed in your hosting account, all you need to look for is design part and functionality part.
Design part is essentially look and feel of the website. Most of the CMS has their design files working separately then that of the programming. To customize wordpress theme you should look out for the theme folder and the style sheet in it. In case of joomla customization you have to search the template files which print the content in the screen with desired font colors, heading, list style and so on.

Functionality is something that prints the content in your site without any look and feel features. All the cms can be grouped in to dynamic websites as all the content are stored in database and then the CMS files written in php queries this MySql database and delivers the content to the real world. The Content that has been delivered to the screen can then appear into the page with the help of design part.

Let’s summarize the process step by step:
(1) Download the CMS
(2) Install it into the webhost’s server
(3) Check the basic version of the CMS without any customization in your domain
(4) Start customizing design part by modifying template/theme files.
(5)To achieve desired functionality in addition to what has been given by the default CMS, you have to make word press widget/joomla module/wordpress plugin/joomla component.
eco-friendly favors

With millions of users and enthusiasts from all around the globe and a low cost of entry this is quickly becoming the dominant content management system (CMS) for small businesses (SMB’s) and even larger enterprises and institutions. We compared Joomla vs Drupal and Joomla vs WordPress which are other worthy technologies but Joomla seemed for us to be the best overall platform for recommending to our customers. As Joomla integrators and Joomla Component Developers we deliver complex Joomla configurations for a wide variety of customers. Joomla is a perfect framework for the micro small business owner that needs training and mentoring to work independently on building their web empire as well as the small business enterprise with complex Joomla configuration needs.

There are several layers in deploying a Joomla CMS project.

* Planning and content architecture
* Template Design and graphics
* Components and Configurations
* User experience
* Customer Programming
* Legacy System Integrations
* SEO and Marketing
* Joomla User Training
* Ongoing Technical Support

Just to name a few… With any technology there are different points of entry depending on the experience and technical aptitude of the humans interacting with the system, the technical and business process requirements and the overall dynamics of the organization implementing the particular solution. We (our CNP Consultants) try to help folks “Get the most value out of their technology investment”. Yea you will see this in our marketing but this is much more than hype. Value can be the key to success or failure. Among the biggest mistakes we have seen folks make and even made ourselves are:

Common Mistake #1

Just because you can do something with technology does not always make it practical.

I have personally implemented many powerful tools that accomplish their intended functionality but they actually never get used to their full potential by the end customers. While these were fun for us to build as developers and to see something cool that works, it did not really serve any of us well since our clients customers do not use them and thus they have a significant investment they are net getting a return on and thus until this first investment is paid for they are not all that excited to engage us to build more stuff.

The key here is determining first the business priorities of the project and then making sure everyone is listening to the needs of the end customer or user. Hey sometime folks build web tools just for themselves. I know I often post blog articles with a lot of links I want to not only share but also refer back to and we put plenty of tools online that we want to use ourselves as much as we want to and share with our customers. Just make sure you are clear why you are doing something and assess if it is going to deliver the right return on your investment.

Stay focused on what your customers are saying and what will yield the greatest return.

Technology implementation can be a never ending pit you throw money into, something that my father used to say about owning a luxury boat. If you are building your site for the shear ego of having a beautiful site with all kinds of creative features and functionality, have at it and of course we love to work with entrepreneurs with big ideas. However, like any relationship and any good investment a long term strategy is often much more practical. Our consulting customers get good advice about products and services that can grow their business or allow them to continue to get value from their investments. I have seen folks to often go for a quick sell and end up with dysfunctional customer relationships that ultimately cost more than the profit you made in the first place. Ask yourself many questions including “Is what I am doing today going to matter a year from now”? If you ask the right questions up front this can help you get the most out of your initiatives.

Technology is a moving target

One of the many reasons we got behind the Joomla CMS project as a core competency was because it was open source which offered freedom and scalable options for solving the greatest amount of business problems. We took the gamble from the trends in the market place that Joomla would continue to grow with features and stability and that the developer community would continue to be attracted to the Joomla framework thus building more confidence in the market place. With a scalable platform that is built on open source code for use was great since we wanted to work with technology that sold itself and that we could support and expand upon it to meet the needs of the types of customers we wanted to attract. Any kind of dynamic web portal project is a moving target and often needs to change course in mid stream. You have to keep good forward momentum yet listen to the trends in the marketplace so you can sail into the wind effectively. An innovative and scalable open source platform like Joomla is a perfect foundation for meeting this challenge.

But wait there is more…

A couple years ago, after a good year of working with Joomla we were looking for solutions that could actually help us build an all-in-one web based framework for managing our business in a Virtual Office Environment (everything accessible on the web). This is when after trying and implementing several CRM and project management tools ranging from SugarCRM to MS Project to SharePoint we found Info@hand CRBM. This was the perfect platform since it was open source code base and integrated with the Joomla CMS and QuickBooks. Now after 3 years of connecting the dots we have a powerful web infrastructure with “Complete transaction life cycle management” and “Customer Relationship Business Management”. Very very very cool platform… we love it and so do many of the customers we have introduced to it. Though this system is also wired up with the DimDim.com conferencing and collaboration suite it also fills many gaps in client customer collaboration. These types of regular new innovations continue to add low cost of entry tools and value to the small business.

Sounds complicated but it is also very simple if you have time as your friend

What we have learned as “early adopters” is that there is much more to it than the technology if you are going to be successful. Complex Joomla Integrations are getting simpler as this platform evolves. The old carpenters saying get the right tool for the right job is very good advice. Since there are so many tools now in our toolbox and we fully understand how they all can work together I know I can start talking about it and it does not take long to get that “deer in the headlights look” from a prospect. The trick here is making sure we establish a clear roadmap and strategy for implementing technologies that will bring the greatest reward to your business and value to our customers. This takes time and effort to get it right and should be done early on in your process.

Common Mistake #2

Just because you have the technology does not mean you should implement it.

The second most challenging aspect of implementing a complicated project is the thought process of “let’s do it all at once”. I have often had clients that want to load up their sites with a ton of components and then they want to throw these new features out to their customers or workforce all at once. Well this is a huge horse pill that never gets swallowed. Hate to say it but until recently I have been guilty of this myself. There is a fine line between “Build it and they will come” and “Here take a bite and let me know if you like it”.

Remember this is all about relationship management

I remember back in my days of dating that it only takes one or two words to “turn off” and scare someone away. Essentially this is a similar process we go through for attracting customers. While you want to make sure what you are presenting is honest and has substance you do not want to overload, overwhelm folks with more information than they are particularly interested in at the moment. You also want to put out information and web tools in a way that they want to have them presented. As in listen well and be a good conversationalist. Such is the case even more now with the Social Technology boon. I used to say “it is not hard to fall in love since people are impulsive by nature but the real challenge is falling in love with the right one”. The same is true with technology. It can be easy to get excited about some new features and want to add them right away to your site just because they are cooler than the site next door. However, every time you push something new out it may distract or turn off your customers.

In relationships of any kind they are best nurtured over time. Deploying technology is a complex multi dimensional relationship. Moving too fast has greater risk of failure for everyone involved. You actually have several relationships and processes that need careful consideration over time:

* Solutions: Customer Needs – Business Process Need – Technology Implementation
* Relationships: Vendor Teams – Client Teams – Customers

In Conclusion work smarter with a good plan

Plan carefully and gather the right information about your customers and how technology can get you the best results as it relates to your business strategy. Make sure you deploy solutions over time with good the right vendors and the right customers. These systems have enough complexity that you have to really keep your eye on the ball or you can and will often times fail. None of us want to waste time or money and the wrong decision in this economy could cost you business. Before you travel anywhere it is a good idea to get directions, a map or invest in a GPS. Why would you not want to invest in good quality consulting to help guide you along the path of implementing technology?

Joomla Roadmap and Planning Guide

Value Builder Methodology

We have since built consulting practices to address these two common mistakes folks make with complex technology implementations. Yea sure we have to be geeks and able to wire all this stuff up and yes we do this well but the trick to getting value out of your technology is much more that the groovy tools we can dish out. With a few exceptions, most of the technology these days is all ready built and what that means is there is a greater need for configuration and being able to map the humans with the technology in a way that will allow you to stay focused on your priorities. Just start asking yourself questions like: What actions will give the best long term results? What will put out the fires of tomorrow before they start? How can I make this profitable to my company and add unique benefits to my customers?This should help get you on the right path.
bride and groom gifts

You may have noticed a new error message upon Windows
start-up since December 31, 2006. The error dialog looks like this:

Windows Defender

Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender

Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search Help and
Support on how to start a service manually.

In addition, you will see the following in your System Event Log:

Event Type:	Error

Event Source:	Service Control Manager

Event Category:	None

Event ID:	7023

Description:

The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:

The system license has expired. Your logon request is denied.

The issue is that Windows Defender Beta support ended on December 31, 2006. Now,
I would have expected this software license expire error to let you know a bit more gracefully.

The good news is that if your are running Windows XP, there is a easy fix. Simply
go to Microsoft.com and look for the “Download Windows Defender” link near the bottom
of the home page. Follow the download and install instructions, and you will be up
to date, protected and will have fixed the start-up error in just minutes.

Now for the bad news…

If you are running Windows 2000, Microsoft has decided to no longer support the Windows
Defender product for the Windows 2000 platform. You can fix the start-up error by uninstalling
Windows Defender from the Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel. Unfortunately,
this will leave you unprotected from Spyware and Malware. Since Microsoft is no longer
providing a Spyware protection product for Windows 2000, you will need to purchase a third
party product in order to be protected in the future.

I must say that I am more than annoyed by this decision at Microsoft to discontinue the
Windows Defender product for Windows 2000. I am a big fan of Windows 2000 as it has been one
of the most stable operating system made by Microsoft to date. I am aware that Microsoft
has discontinued official support for Win2k as of June 30, 2005. Actually, it has
entered the “Extended Support Phase” for the Win2k product. This means they will have “extended”
support until June 2010… without Spyware protection! This is like the proverbial knife in the
back for existing Win2k users. Actually, more like the proverbial gun to the head to get
you to upgrade to Windows Vista.

Now, there is no doubt that Windows XP and Vista are a much better protected operating systems
right out of the box. In the networks that I support, XP Pro SP2 or Windows 2003 Server is the
standard for any new deployments. I just resent the gun to the head thing!

For Win2k users, you will obviously make your own decision about this dilemma in which I see you
have three choices:

1) Uninstall Windows Defender and just take your chances on operating without Spyware protection.

2) Uninstall Windows Defender and purchase a third party Spyware protection product.

3) Decide to put your money towards the upgrade to XP or Vista, which will include the free

Spyware protection.

I would not recommend choice 1. The Internet is just too dangerous of a place to venture without
protection. You may choose choice 2 because you love Win2k and just do not want to hassle with
the potential upgrade headaches. Or, you may choose 3 because you are up to the upgrade task and
you feel it make more sense to invest in the future.

If you decide on the upgrade to Vista path, please look for my “Upgrading to Vista” article coming soon.
edible favors

Internet has become more of a necessity than a luxury these days. We are in some way or the other dependent upon the use of internet. The ease of using it and the things that it can make possible just by a click is what makes this a magnificent tool. Looking at the same business has shifted to a great extent from the real to the virtual world of web. Ecommerce has emerged greatly and is doing quite well and there is a lot to explore with the potential ecommerce offers.

To have a share in the pie most of the people are wiling to try their hands on selling their products and services online. However, majority of them are not willing to spend. For people like that you have Joomla. Joomla allows you to create a website, which could be used as a platform to market the products & services. You can use this to do every thing you need to get a site up and running. A more accurate definition of the same could be that, this is a content management system that allows the user to put together a website and to manage its content.

Once you get the software for yourself, you don’t have to worry on how to use the software? As the software itself provides you with a user guide that guides you through the use, application and functionality of the software. The user guide by Joomla is enough to educate you about the software. There a number of Joomla help tools that assist you when you are caught at some difficulty. There are even Joomla tutorials which are also used for assistance.

Other than these, there are Joomla tutorials as well to help you. You would find the following categories for Joomla tutorials – Administration; Search Engine Friendly Category; HTML Category; Joomla Module Category; Component Category and Template Category. Each of the Joomla tutorials would help you understand the facet in question. Going through each of these you would be able to learn Joomla better. If you feel that you are not really comfortable with the Joomla user guide of the Joomla tutorial or the extended Joomla help then you could look at the Joomla training option. By doing this you would be able to break the barriers and learn to use Joomla.

Joomla is free software that contains all the help and templates required to set a website together, but one thing the Joomla templates are not that unique as you expected to be. The websites that you are looking to upload would literally look like other websites. But the positive aspect of the same is that it is free and by utilizing this you can in fact have a real time understanding ahead of deciding whether you would want to start on with ecommerce. A lot of people are not aware of Ecommerce and people who are aware of it, don’t want to get into Ecommerce as they don’t want to take any risk or chances. Once if you use Joomla, you would definitely come to know about the benefits and economies of Ecommerce.
spring wedding favors
