What is your favorite (free) CMS software? Joomla? Drupal? Which one have you tried and compared? Why do you like it? Which is best for a visual designer (someone that doesn’t want to deal with coding?)
Thanks!

For someone that _doesn’t_ want to deal with coding, then Joomla is better than Drupal to skin with a custom template. With that said, this should not be your driving issue when choosing a CMS.
Joomla has a lower learning curve. It’s much easier to create custom templates for and there is an active community supporting the software. It’s easier to find a free lancer to do work on the site if need be and there is a lot of free and commercial modules and components. Joomla has it’s limitations. It does not lend itself well to doing complicated content management, has a weaker user permission system than Drupal and does poorly with custom Java/PHP customization compared to Drupal.
Drupal has excellent code behind it. It really is the ‘coders’ CMS. Lends itself well to customization and has very powerful functionality OTB (out of the box). The permission levels for users are very fine grained and new user roles can be created easily. The community is very active and commercial support is growing. Drupal has lots of modules and components to extend it’s functionality. Drupal has a much higher learning curve and is not as intuitive as it could be. It is not as easy to install as joomla.
Before you choose a CMS, you need to figure out how much time your wish to spend in learning a CMS and what your needs are in the site your creating. If your looking for a regular small business site, personal site or a small community site, then I would suggest Joomla. If your looking to build a complicated content system, large community with complicated user permissions or a busy site that needs to be hosted on a cluster, then Drupal is the CMS for you.
Good luck!
